Accessible and Sensory Gardens: Designing for Every Visitor
Gardens have always been places of restoration, but for much of their history they were designed with a single, able-bodied visitor in mind. Gravel paths, steep ha-has, narrow stiles, and long distances between seating meant that a significant portion of the population was quietly excluded. That is changing. Sensory design, accessibility auditing, and a rethinking of what the garden experience actually requires have transformed some of the world's most visited landscapes into genuinely inclusive places. This piece looks at the principles behind that transformation and the gardens leading it.

What sensory design actually means
The phrase "sensory garden" is sometimes used loosely to mean a small, pleasant corner with lavender and a water feature. Properly understood, it is a design philosophy that deliberately addresses all five senses rather than privileging sight. Scent is planned seasonally, not incidentally: night-scented stocks, winter-flowering Sarcococca, and summer jasmine create a succession that works even for visitors with limited vision. Texture is built into path edges, planting beds, and seating. Sound is considered — trickling water, rustling grasses, and the absence of machinery noise near contemplative areas all matter. Taste, in medicinal and kitchen-garden settings, is invited rather than prohibited. The Sensory Trust, a UK charity that grew partly from the work done by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), has developed practical frameworks for garden managers who want to move beyond cosmetic adjustments to genuine sensory richness.
Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Kent
Sissinghurst is one of England's most visited gardens, and the route designed by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson in the 1930s was never intended for wheelchair users. The tower steps, the narrow doorways between garden rooms, and the moat walk's uneven stone edges made large parts of the site functionally inaccessible for decades. The National Trust undertook a phased accessibility review beginning in the 2010s that rerouted several paths, resurfaced key connections with compacted stone dust, and installed contextual information boards at accessible heights. The White Garden and the Rose Garden are now fully accessible, and an alternative route to the tower offers views over the Weald without requiring the climb. The work was done carefully enough that most visitors do not notice the interventions as interventions — they simply experience the garden.
Chelsea Physic Garden, London
Founded in 1673 by the Society of Apothecaries, Chelsea Physic Garden operates within a walled, four-acre site that has barely changed in plan since the eighteenth century. The raised beds that distinguish its planting design were originally there to separate plant families for systematic teaching, but they have the secondary effect of bringing plant material to a height accessible to wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility. The garden has built on this historical accident by labelling plants in large-format type and Braille, training guides in descriptive interpretation, and offering touch-and-scent guided tours for visually impaired visitors. The narrow paths between beds remain a constraint, but the central path is wide enough for a standard wheelchair, and the main planting areas are reachable from it.
The Eden Project, Cornwall
The Eden Project's biomes — large enough to contain tree canopies — presented enormous accessibility challenges from the outset. The site was built in a reclaimed china-clay pit, which meant sloping access and significant elevation changes. The designers addressed this with an internal tramway, step-free paths through both the Rainforest and Mediterranean biomes, and accessible seating at intervals. The outdoor gardens use compacted aggregate rather than loose gravel, and the core paths maintain a gradient well within standard wheelchair accessibility tolerances. The sensory dimension is partly accidental — the Rainforest biome's humidity, warmth, and overwhelming plant smell create an immersive sensory experience that visitors with visual impairments consistently describe as one of the most powerful garden environments they have encountered.
Singapore's Sensory Garden at Hort Park
Singapore's Hort Park, on Alexandra Road, contains one of Asia's most deliberately designed sensory gardens, built as a demonstration space for horticultural therapy principles. The Sensory Garden there uses raised planters, interactive water features at seated height, textured paving transitions, and a plant palette chosen for scent (Gardenia, Michelia, Plumeria), texture (Lamb's ear, Stachys, papyrus), and sound (wind chimes deliberately positioned at intervals). The site is fully step-free, with a wide, smooth looped path that can be completed without retracing. Singapore's National Parks Board has embedded the same principles across several of its therapeutic gardens in regional parks, creating a city-wide network of sensory spaces.
Versailles and wheelchair access in formal gardens
Versailles presents an apparent paradox: a garden designed as an exercise in absolute geometric control, where the visitor's eye was to be guided by long axial vistas, is now one of the most wheelchair-accessible major gardens in Europe. The reason is the nature of French formal design itself. Le Nôtre's parterres de broderie are flat. The grand allées are wide. The surfaces, though historically gravel, have been progressively upgraded. The Château de Versailles has published a detailed accessibility route map that takes visitors through the main parterre gardens, along the Grand Canal on its north side, and through the Bosquets via the wider allées. Not everything is accessible — several of the enclosed bosquet rooms have narrow gates, and the Orangerie terrace requires ramp access — but the core of one of the world's greatest gardens is now navigable by most visitors in a wheelchair.
The Royal Horticultural Society's accessibility audits
The RHS, which operates four flagship gardens — Wisley in Surrey, Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire, Hyde Hall in Essex, and Rosemoor in Devon — began a systematic accessibility audit process in the early 2010s. The audits covered surface quality, gradient, seating frequency, signage height and contrast, and toilet provision. Wisley, the largest of the four, now offers a fully accessible route that takes in the glasshouse, the mixed borders, and the rock garden's lower section. Harlow Carr, set in a steep Yorkshire valley, required the most significant engineering work — a new path network with resting points and surface upgrading on the steepest sections. The RHS has published its accessibility statements online and updates them annually, which means visitors can plan in detail before arrival.
Design principles for garden managers
The Sensory Trust's guidance for garden managers identifies six practical principles. First, surfaces: compacted stone dust, tarmac, or resin-bound aggregate outperform gravel for wheelchair users and those with canes. Second, gradient: a sustained slope above 1:20 is tiring for manual wheelchair users over distance; 1:12 is the regulatory maximum. Third, width: 1.8 metres allows two wheelchairs to pass. Fourth, rest points: seating with a firm seat edge and armrests every 50 to 100 metres on longer routes. Fifth, plant height: at least part of every planting area should be accessible from a seated position. Sixth, multi-sensory planting: at least one element of scent, texture, and sound along every main route.
The broader case
Accessible garden design is not a separate category from good garden design. It is, in most cases, a tightening of the standards that produce good design for everyone: clear circulation, legible structure, comfortable resting places, and plants chosen for qualities beyond appearance alone. The gardens that have done this work well — Sissinghurst, Chelsea Physic, the Eden Project, Singapore's Hort Park — are better gardens for all their visitors as a result.
