Medicinal and Physic Gardens: The Oldest Living Laboratories
Before pharmaceutical chemistry, before synthetic drugs, before even the germ theory of disease, medicine was plants. The physician who could not identify, grow, and prepare medicinal species was not a physician at all. The physic garden — hortus medicus, orto dei semplici, jardin des simples — was the laboratory in which that knowledge was accumulated, tested, and transmitted across generations. Several of those gardens survive today, still planted, still teaching, and now recognised as among the most historically important cultural landscapes in the world.

Orto Botanico di Padova: the oldest in its original location
The Orto Botanico di Padova, founded in 1545 by the Venetian Senate for the University of Padua's medical faculty, is the world's oldest botanical garden still in its original location. This fact alone justifies its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1997). The garden was established to grow the piante semplici — "simples," the raw plant ingredients of medicine — needed for teaching and for the university's dispensary. Students needed to be able to identify plants from live specimens, not just from the unreliable woodcuts in herbals.
The original circular layout, 84 metres in diameter, divided into four quadrants by two intersecting paths and enclosed by a circular wall, is preserved and still used. The quadrants were further subdivided into geometric beds representing the four parts of the known world and their characteristic plants. Many of the historic specimens remain: the oldest garden resident is a Chamaerops humilis (European fan palm) planted in 1585, sheltered for centuries by a custom-built greenhouse. The garden has expanded over time, adding a biodiversity garden, a systematic collection, and collections focusing on Venetian lagoon ecology, but the core circular hortus remains the heart of the site.
Orto Botanico di Pisa: the second oldest
The Orto Botanico di Pisa, established in 1544, precedes Padua by one year in its founding documents, though it has moved location twice and therefore cedes the "original location" distinction to Padua. Founded at the initiative of the botanist Luca Ghini (1490-1556), who is also credited with inventing the herbarium technique of pressing and drying plant specimens for study, the Pisa garden was from the start a site of original research rather than purely practical teaching. Ghini corresponded with botanists across Europe and used the garden to grow plants collected on expeditions. Its current site, on the Via Luca Ghini, holds collections of around 6,000 species including a significant tropical collection in its glasshouses and an impressive rock garden section.
Chelsea Physic Garden: the apothecaries' garden in the city
Chelsea Physic Garden in London was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, who needed a site to train their apprentices in the identification of medicinal plants. The four-acre walled garden beside the Thames at Chelsea — then a village outside London, chosen for its mild microclimate — has been in continuous operation ever since. It is not the world's oldest physic garden, but it may be the most continuously relevant.
The garden's most famous episode came in 1732, when its curator Philip Miller sent cotton seeds from his collection to the new colony of Georgia in America. Those seeds founded the American cotton industry. The garden also played a role in the early organisation of global plant exchange: Hans Sloane, who purchased the Chelsea estate and made it available to the Apothecaries at low rent in exchange for specimens sent to the Royal Society, effectively turned Chelsea into a node in a worldwide plant-collection network.
Today the garden's 5,000 plant species are arranged in a combination of historical order — the systematic beds where plants are grouped by family — and thematic collections including a Garden of World Medicine, a pharmaceutical garden, and a historical garden illustrating pre-Linnaean classification. The glasshouse holds the oldest rock garden in England, built in 1772 with Icelandic lava brought from Iceland by Joseph Banks.
Hortus Botanicus Leiden: Clusius and the tulip
The Hortus Botanicus Leiden, founded in 1590, holds a special place in European garden history because it is directly connected to one of the most consequential plant introductions in European cultural and economic history. Carolus Clusius (1526-1609), the Flemish botanist appointed as the first director of the Leiden garden, had previously worked at the Imperial Court in Vienna, where he had obtained bulbs of the Turkish tulip from the Ottoman ambassador. When Clusius moved to Leiden, he brought tulip bulbs with him. Some were stolen from his garden — the act that is often credited with setting off the speculative tulip trade that became tulipomania in the 1630s.
The Hortus Leiden today still has a Clusius garden, reconstructed to the 1594 planting plan and containing the types of plants he grew. Beyond this historical reconstruction, the garden holds significant collections of succulents, tropical plants, and ancient specimens, including a 350-year-old Eastern Cape cycad in its spectacular glass conservatory.
Oxford Physic Garden: the oldest in England
The Oxford Physic Garden, now called the Oxford Botanic Garden, was founded in 1621 on land donated by Henry Danvers, Earl of Danby, and is the oldest botanic garden in the British Isles. Like Padua and Leiden, it was founded to supply medicinal plants to the university's medical teaching. The walled enclosure on the High Street beside the River Cherwell, dominated by three baroque gateway piers designed by Inigo Jones's pupil Nicholas Stone, is one of the most beautiful small garden sites in England. The garden holds around 8,000 plant species and retains a working research programme, particularly in plant evolutionary biology and climate change ecology.
The monastery tradition
The physic garden tradition did not begin in universities. The earliest systematically managed medicinal plant gardens in Europe were in Benedictine monasteries, where the Rule of St Benedict's injunction to care for the sick made medical knowledge both a religious obligation and a practical necessity. The ninth-century Carolingian plan of the monastery of St Gallen, a theoretical ideal rather than a built plan, shows a distinct medicus garden of sixteen beds beside the infirmary, each labelled with a plant: rose, lily, sage, rue, costmary, fenugreek, mint, tansy, and others.
The monastery at Würzburg maintained a physic garden — the Würzburg Hofgarten has its roots in this tradition — and the hospital gardens of medieval England, like those at St Bartholomew's in London, were practical spaces for growing healing herbs. None of these survive in their medieval form, but many monastic gardens across Europe have been reconstructed on documentary evidence and continue to grow the plants their founders grew.
What to look for on a visit
A physic garden visit is most rewarding when you engage with the labels. Understanding why a particular plant is in the collection — whether as a source of a specific alkaloid, as an illustration of a Linnaean genus, or as a native species whose ecology the garden is studying — gives each plant a story. The best physic gardens are also explicit about the dark history of plant medicine: the poisonous species that killed as well as cured, the plants used in execution (hemlock), and the complex pharmacological reality that many medicinal plants are also toxic in higher doses.
